Exclamation Wrong Volume Being Shown on icharts.in ?

The volume for Nifty is shown as 10.63 K on icharts.in (http://www.icharts.in/charts.html)

whereas it is shown as

119.4 M on chartink.com (Nifty EOD Chart NSE, BSE Charts) for 13th May.

The NSE site also shows 119.4 M, so that does mean icharts.in is showing wrong volume? Its denomination is in thousands, surely Nifty trades in millions not in thousands right? or have I missed something?

incharts.in is using NSE's total cash market turnover (crore) as the volume for NSE Nifty.

Thanks for the clarification Alchemist,

So, from what I understood - 119.4 Million is the number of shares traded whereas 10.63 thousand Crores is the amount in cash of those 119.4 Million shares traded. Have I understood correct?

Shares traded (119.4 Million) = Money Traded (10.63 thousand Crore)?

Please correct if I am wrong.

Thanks again.

- arcus.

No.

10633 crore was the total NSE cash market turnover. This included all NSE listed stocks, not just the Nifty stocks.

The turnover for Nifty stocks was 5691 crore.

You can check the turnover data for Nifty here:

Oh, Okay. Got it.

However, don't you think it is wrong to report volume in terms of the total NSE cash market turnover?

I mean, volume is usually defined as the number of shares or contracts traded in a security (in this case - 50 companies shares) - Volume Definition

Just a thought,

Thanks for the clarification again.

I won't say it is wrong, but using the volume of 50 Nifty stocks would have been more appropriate.

Indices are created to gauge market sentiment and maybe that's why icharts is using volume of the entire market for Nifty charts.
