Smile Beta

Hi Friends,

I'm new to capital market, and from my teacher I came to know that in the capital market every company has assigned beta rate.

e.g. Dell beta rate is 3%.

I was told that if we could measure the beta rate properly and could have a control over it, we could minimize the risk to the optimum level, so that we could make a good return from our investment.

Is that's true?

And if it's, then could you help me know how to compute the beta rate? In fact I wanted to know everything about beta.

Kindly help.

Thanks in advance.
