Default Mobile Portability - Bad News For Telecom

The government plans to introduce mobile portability in a phased manner.

What does mobile portability mean?

It means that if a customer is not satisfied with the services of one mobile operator, he may switch to another operator without actually changing his number.

In the first phase, mobile portability will be introduced only in the four metros.

If such an option is introduced, the mobile market will get extremely competitive.

This is because now besides new customers, mobile companies will also try to steal existing customers from other companies.

This would mean dropping rates and thinner margins for mobile companies.

Many believe that Reliance Communications will benefit from this development. This is because it will be able to steal customers from GSM players.

However, in the long run, even Reliance Communications will not benefit as rates will become competitive.

Only real beneficiaries will be the customers. .

Default Survival of the Fittest

More than negative factor, it can be called as a step towards making "Customer a King". There are so many people who prefer to stick to the same old number & dont cancel just bcoz it is the number which is known to other people since olden times. They cannot change the service provider due to no facility of number portability.

So, the best service provider is what will stand out & win in this market. The quality will improve in the service of common people. Customer will be the winner. Also, better client satisfaction by telecom companies would lead to betterment of the industry in general. I dont think we would see any cartelsation of any sorts. It can only improve the sector prospects. Pls correct me if i am wrong.
