I too thought that today market will open But

I think now we just go with western style

I guess there are lots of prominent holidays falling on Sat/Sun, unlike past years.

That's why they have taken the privilege and declared 1st Jan as Holiday.

Yes 10 holidays in a year is a standard norm (could be a mandated RULE, don't know)
52 * 5 - 10 = 250 working days in a year.
