Default How You Could Get Cheated At A Petrol Pump

Some time ago I got cheated at an Indian Oil Corporation petrol pump in the Kharadi (Pune) area on NH4 (Kharadi to Kalyani Nagar side). I wanted to highlight it so that forum members could be cautious.

I went to the petrol pump and asked for a "full tank". The guy started filling it and as the cost of the petrol on the indicator reached Rs 200, he said there is some issue, there is some "back pressure" and asked me to start the car. I did that and as I came out to check what is happening, another guy came us and asked me if I would be paying by card/cash and several irrelevant questions.

I saw that the guy continued filling the tank without resetting the counter. but at the end he demanded total cost + Rs 200.

I confronted him with the facts but he insisted that he has reset the counter. The modus operandi is that the person asking irrelevant questions distracts your attention for some time so you are not able to determine if the counter was reset.

I told them I knew they were cheating me and also told them the modus operandi as I saw it.

I did not pursue the matter further with the police because at that time my license plate had got spoilt and few digits were missing

My advice to everyone:

If the person filling the tank says there is "some problem" mid-way when you ask for a full tank, ask him to stop. Pay whatever is on the counter and simply drive away.
