Default Long Term Debt?

How do I get the Long Term Debt of any company?

As an Example, I am trying with Great Eastern Shipping.

Here is the Balance Sheet

http://www.edelweiss.in/Market/Finan...b=BalanceSheet

Share Capital = 152.29 Crore.

If you click on the Financial Ratio's Tab, you can see that their

Long Term Debt Equity Ratio is 0.88

i.e. Long Term debt / Equity = 0.88

So Long Term Debt = 0.88 * Equity

Assuming Equity = Share Capital

Long Term Debt = 0.88 * 152.29 = 134 Crore.

Is my calculation Correct here?

Can I get the Long Term Debt from anywhere else on the balance sheet.

This is the same balance sheet on the NSE Site

http://www.nseindia.com/marketinfo/c...282&viewFlag=N

How can I verify that my calculation here is correct?

I have a feeling something is wrong because their Debt-Equity Ratio is also mentioned as 0.88 on the Edelweiss site.

That means their debt is same as their long term debt.

And their balance sheet mentions their total debt as 5370.16 crores !

What's the difference better debt, total debt & long term debt & how can someone calculate each one from the balance sheet?

Shareholder's Equity or Networth means the following:

Share Capital + Share Premium + Accumulated Reserves + Retained Earnings.

So in this case Equity = 5707.45 crore.

For LT Debt :Equity ratio we consider only long term debt:

i.e. Secured Loan + Unsecured Loan = 5211.57 crore.

So LT Debt : Equity ratio is : 0.91.

For Total Debt :Equity ratio we consider all debt

i.e. = 5370.16/5707.45

So Total Debt : Equity ratio is : 0.94.

Secured & Unsecured Loans can both be long & short term. So how did you classify it as purely long term?

All short term loans due for payment during the next operational cycle or next financial year ( whichever is shorter) is taken into current liabilities.

Only long term secured and unsecured loans are taken to liabilities and used is calculating long term debt.

Other items in total debt are Deferred Tax Liability, Deferred Tax Assets etc.

You will find all your answers if you look at an annual report.

Part I of Schedule VI, Companies' Act, 1956 specifies the format of the balance sheet and makes certain disclosures mandatory.

All debt, long-term as well as short-term is included in "loan funds".

The details of the loans are mentioned in the schedules.

Usually the 3rd and 4h schedules contain the details of secured loans and unsecured loans respectively.

There is a separate schedule containing the details of the current liabilities.

Pick up an annual report and go through the balance sheet.
