Question Silver ETF?

Is there any ETF for silver?

I find silver more attractive as there has been relatively less appreciation than gold and other metals.

There is no Silver ETF currently in India.

You can find the list of ETF's listed on the NSE here:

http://nseindia.com/content/products/prod_etfs7.htm

In the last one year, silver has given returns of around 14.7% in dollar terms and gold has given returns of around 31%.

However, from 2000-2007 both gold and silver have given similar returns of 189% and 174% respectively. (8 year return).

I think, in the long term, luck will decide which metal gives a better returns....

Thumbs up my bets are on silver

Hi Alchemist, thanks for that reply.

I read somewhere in TOI that all the metals have appreciated by more than 600% in the last 20 years except for Silver which has appreciated by only 300% during that time.

Also Silver apart from being used in Jewelry is also consumed (remember Himani Sona Chandi) and being an excellent conductor of electricity, it is used in microchips.

Tthey also said that new silver will be unearthed for maximum time of 10 years as the reserves are going to get over and the prices are going to skyrocket.

I know that Barclays bank has an ETF for silver but I don't know whether they have entered the Indian market or not.

Thanks a lot anyway.

Does any one have any idea on this -

Do we have any SILVER ETF listed on BSE or NSE the way we have for example GOLD BeES on NSE?

At present there isn't any silver ETF in India.

One reason for it is that it is much more costly to store silver than gold.

A g of silver costs Rs 25.

A g of gold costs Rs 1600.

Silver's density is only 10.5 gram/cubic cm.

Gold's density is 19.3 gram/cubic cm.

For the same value, silver needs 110-120 times more space for storage.

Personally, I too wish there was a silver ETF.

Many analysts feel silver will give better returns compared to gold in the next few years.

Yes, very true, I've read somewhere AMC of India have come out or have plans for Silver ETF but was not able to locate it on NSE, compared to gold, silver has more industrial application.

I have edited the earlier post as I had made a mistake.

I am adding the calculation.

(Using September 2009 prices).

Rs 1 worth of silver = 1/25 gram.

Rs 1 worth of gold = 1/1600 gram.

Volume of Rs 1 worth of silver = 1/25 (gram) X 1/10.5 (cubic cm per gram).

Volume of Rs 1 worth of gold = 1/1600 (gram) X 1/19.3 (cubic cm per gram).

If we take same values of both (Rs 1), ratio of volume of silver to volume of gold

= (1600X19.3) / (25X10.5) = 117.64.
